Abstract
Population ageing is a global social phenomenon that requires a better and faster implementation of advances in smart home technologies to create age-appropriated services and environments. Smart homes, which incorporate sensors, actuators and environmental and portable medical devices as well as modern communication technologies, can enable continuous and remote monitoring of the health and well-being of the elderly. Health monitoring is in line with current trends in the medical and social systems. The case study included in this paper presents a system for monitoring and assessing the health of the elderly in an intelligent environment. The major concern, in this sense, is to ensure optimal access to smart home technology for the elderly, aiming at the impact on quality of life, health and social involvement.
